Tara Calico: The Bike Ride, the Vanishing, and the Mysterious Photograph
On September 20, 1988, nineteen-year-old Tara Leigh Calico left her home near Belen, New Mexico, for a routine bicycle ride along New Mexico State Road 47. She was riding her mother’s neon-pink Huffy bicycle because her own was damaged. Witnesses saw Tara heading north toward home at approximately 11:45 that morning. Within a short period, Tara and the highly distinctive bicycle disappeared. Neither has been recovered.
Nine months later, a Polaroid photograph found in Port St. Joe, Florida, appeared to show a dark-haired young woman and a boy in troubling circumstances. Tara’s mother believed the woman was her daughter. But expert comparisons produced conflicting conclusions, and modern Valencia County investigators say the woman was not Tara.
This episode follows the documented final hours of Tara’s ride, the uncertain roadside clues, the photograph that changed the public story of the case, and the later investigation that returned attention to Valencia County. Investigators now believe Tara encountered local people and did not survive, but no public prosecution has resolved the case. Tara’s remains and her bicycle are still missing.
