"Wanting To Clean Up Is Right-Wing" WA Probes Seattle Volunteer Group

A Seattle volunteer nonprofit spent years cleaning up the city's parks — and now the state of Washington is investigating it. Not for fraud. Not for violence. For how volunteers handled needles. The woman behind We Heart Seattle, Andrea Suarez, has watched critics methodically brand her work as right-wing extremism. As a Reason reporter put it on KIRO Newsradio: "Wanting to clean up the city is now, I guess, a right-wing thing."

Sean interviewed Suarez years ago when the group was just getting started — and she was, and still is, a lifelong liberal. The right-wing label isn't coming from evidence. It's coming from people with a financial and political interest in keeping the homeless industrial complex running. Washington state is spending astronomical sums on homelessness and the situation keeps getting worse. When a volunteer shows up and makes a visible dent, the system doesn't thank her. It investigates her.

The trigger for the state probe? A Labor and Industries complaint about how We Heart Seattle volunteers handled discarded needles — a procedural grievance so minor it barely registers against the scale of dysfunction in Seattle's parks. Instead of gratitude, Suarez got a compliance form. If even a fraction of the energy used to harass this group went toward actually picking up trash, Seattle might look a little different.

New episodes every weekday covering Pacific Northwest politics, urban policy, and the stories the mainstream press ignores.
