427 | How Anxiety Shows Up—and Changes—in the Playroom20. Aug.20 Min.

In this episode, I answer several questions about two anxious girls whose play is giving us a fascinating look at what happens when children begin confronting the very things anxiety tells them to avoid. From putting sandy fidgets back into a bucket and intentionally leaving personal toys behind, to breaking open squishies, making enormous messes, and covering hands with paint, I explore how seemingly small choices can reflect meaningful shifts toward spontaneity, freedom, and reduced inhibition. I also discuss permanence play and why leaving personal objects in the playroom may be particularly meaningful for a child struggling with separation.

I also look at a 12-year-old processing divorce, remarriage, and transitions between two homes through remarkably symbolic sand play, along with the creative way she invites her therapist into her artwork without directly surrendering responsibility. Throughout both cases, I explain why we don't need to decipher the meaning of children's play in order for CCPT to work—but understanding what we observe can help us recognize the incredible work children are already doing for themselves. These sessions are powerful reminders of what becomes possible when we remain adherent, provide unconditional acceptance, and give anxious children the freedom to confront their fears at their own pace.
