Resilience, Purpose, and Moving Forward with DJ Shivam Patel

What does it mean to keep moving forward when it would be easier not to?

In this 100th episode, Coach Cam sits down with fellow Marine Corps veteran, DJ, artist, and coach Shivam Patel for an honest conversation about resilience, mental health, purpose, philosophy, community, and finding healthy ways to navigate life's inevitable highs and lows.

For Shivam, resilience can be described simply:

“The act of moving forward when it’s easier not to.”

That idea becomes the foundation for a wide-ranging conversation about depression, identity, military service, Stoicism, therapy, mentorship, hobbies, service to others, and the tools we can build before life gets difficult.

RESILIENCE DOESN’T MEAN LIFE STOPS HURTING

Shivam and Cam discuss the reality that life isn't a flat ride. There will be highs, lows, victories, losses, moments of clarity, and periods when simply moving forward can feel incredibly difficult.

“The world gets dark here and there for everybody.”

Rather than pretending those moments don't exist, the conversation focuses on developing tools, relationships, healthy outlets, and perspectives that can help us navigate them.

PURPOSE BEYOND THE UNIFORM

One of the central themes of the episode is purpose.

Shivam shares a conversation with his sister about identity after military service and the realization that purpose isn't contained in a uniform, rank, title, or profession.

“Each and every one of us in our own way has a purpose. It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing.”

Purpose can be found in caring for family, mentoring someone, creating art, coaching, volunteering, teaching, helping a neighbor, or simply being present for another human being.

BUILDING YOUR INNER CITADEL

The conversation also explores Stoic philosophy and lessons from Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, and Seneca. Shivam discusses the concept of developing an “inner citadel” — building internal strength and practicing tools before adversity arrives.

Cam and Shivam connect ancient philosophy with modern mental wellness practices, including mindfulness, cognitive behavioral approaches, emotional regulation, therapy, and understanding what is and isn't within our control.

FIND YOUR PEOPLE. FIND YOUR OUTLETS.

Res
