AWAKE, YOU DRUNKARDS

What if God decides that the only way to get my attention is shock and awe? The phrase is a military term coined in the 1990s and refers to a strategy to achieve rapid dominance on the battlefield. As it might relate to the Christian life, which is itself a battlefield, God is patient to an extreme with my obstinate ways, but he certainly reserves the right to act decisively to confront me if it suits his will and ultimately works to my benefit. That, in essence, is the word that the prophet Joel preached to the people of Israel. This eight-message series will take us verse-by-verse through the Book of Joel to examine God’s coming judgment on the world and the only hope we have through Jesus Christ to receive his grace instead. God got the people of Israel’s attention through shock and awe. Will he get our attention too?
