标题:Donald Trump fails to bend the Federal Reserve to his will
正文:Kevin Warsh has rebuffed Donald Trump’s demands for low borrowing costs, as the president’s pick to run the Federal Reserve led it to the first rate rise since 2023 less than four months into the job. The central bank chair on Wednesday offered the strongest evidence yet that he is prepared to disregard Trump when he corralled all 12 rate setters on the Federal Open Market Committee into backing a quarter-point rate rise. “The plain fact is that inflation is too high and has been for too long,” Warsh said, as he repeatedly told journalists that he would be “hard pressed” to describe current interest rates as so high that they would slow the economy.
知识点:rebuff v. /rɪˈbʌf/
· 英文释义:to reject someone or something in a blunt or abrupt manner
· 中文释义:断然拒绝,回绝
· 文中意:沃什顶住了特朗普要求压低借贷成本的压力(比 refuse 更强调“直接、干脆地挡回去”,带有不给面子的意味)
· 例句一:She rebuffed his offer of help with a curt shake of her head. 她干脆地摇了摇头,回绝了他的帮忙。
· 例句二:The company rebuffed the takeover bid, calling it undervalued. 该公司断然拒绝了收购要约,称其估值过低。
