My Big Dog

In the children's book My Big Dog, a territorial cat named Merl finds his peaceful, solitary life disrupted by the arrival of a rambunctious puppy. The story follows the feline’s humorous and increasingly desperate attempts to reclaim his home by hiding from or getting rid of the growing golden retriever. After a series of failed ventures to find a new residence, Merl ends up cold and alone, only to be rescued and brought home by the very dog he tried to escape. Ultimately, the cat begrudgingly accepts his new companion, provided he can still maintain his sense of authority over the household. This narrative, crafted by Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel, explores themes of friendship and adaptation through the eyes of a moody but charming pet.
