When Does the Holy Spirit Come? Acts 2:1-6 (KJV) | A.W. Tozer Sermon Breakdown
When does the Holy Spirit come? A.W. Tozer's text is Acts 2:1-6 (KJV), and his answer is "Don't beg for the Holy Spirit, glorify Jesus Christ."
A.W. Tozer Sermon Breakdown Pt 1 (Tozer's Ten Messages on the Holy Spirit), hosted by Matt Hepner and TopLobsta.
Straight Bible opens its A.W. Tozer series with the first of Tozer's ten messages on the Holy Spirit, "Don't Beg for the Holy Spirit, Glorify Jesus Christ." Tozer's point from Acts 2 is that the important thing at Pentecost was not that the Spirit had come but that Jesus had been exalted (Acts 2:32-33, 36). Jesus said it on the last great day of the feast: "the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified" (John 7:37-39). Where Jesus is glorified, the Holy Spirit comes. He does not have to be begged.
From there Tozer says the church must be more than "a heavenly institution being operated in an earthly manner." A Spirit-filled congregation is joyful (the Moravians), useful to the whole community, and "ensamples to all that believe" (1 Thessalonians 1:7-8). Who will not feel at home there: people who wear religion as a Sunday garment, who will not let the cross change their plans, who expect entertainment, or who want only the church's cultural value. Who will: those who want to be rid of their sin, want to know God, and know the Shepherd's voice. Along the way: Ravenhill's "Where are the Elijahs of God?", Wesley and Whitefield preaching in the open air, and whether the podcast is today's open air.
