Magnifica Humanitas, Chapter 1: Why Catholic Social Teaching Matters

<p>In Chapter 1 of <em>Magnifica Humanitas</em>, Amanda and Jonathan step back from AI itself to look at the framework the Church will use to evaluate it.</p><p>This chapter traces the development of Catholic social teaching through the popes, from <em>Rerum Novarum</em> through John Paul II, Benedict XVI, Francis, and now Leo XIV. Along the way, Amanda and Jonathan unpack why the Church has something to say about economics, technology, work, power, and public life in the first place.</p><p>They discuss:</p><ul><li>The dignity of the human person as the starting point for social doctrine</li><li>Why work is more than a paycheck or a cost of production</li><li>Fair wages, worker protections, and the danger of reducing people to productivity</li><li>Solidarity, subsidiarity, and the common good</li><li>Why profit and markets must remain subordinate to the moral law</li><li>How Catholic social teaching develops without abandoning what came before</li><li>Why the Gospel remains the lens for judging what humanizes, dehumanizes, liberates, or oppresses</li><li>What all of this means as the Church prepares to address AI more directly</li></ul><p>This chapter is foundational for the rest of the series.
