Leave No One Behind

Leave No One Behind8. Sept.40 Min.

What does it really mean to leave no one behind?

For most of my life, those words belonged to military service, Search and Rescue, public-safety diving, and emergency response. You count the people who went in. You count them again when they come out. If one person is missing, the mission is not finished.

But over the years, I learned that people can become lost without physically disappearing.

A veteran can come home while part of him remains somewhere else. A grieving person can continue functioning while carrying a wound nobody sees. A family member can become distant while sitting in the same room. Someone can walk away from faith, hide pain behind competence, or quietly begin believing that nobody would notice if they disappeared.

In this episode of The David Burnell Podcast, I share what rescue work taught me about searching for the one, carrying what belongs in our arms, accepting help when our own strength is no longer enough, and recognizing when courage means holding on—and when it means letting go.

I return to the recovery at Fremont Lake, where I found myself descending with a man I was determined to bring home until another diver placed a hand on my tank and added the lift I could not generate alone. I also revisit Sheridan Lake, where I learned that determination can become dangerous when pride refuses to recognize a limit.

Those experiences eventually taught me something much larger than rescue.

No one comes home alone.

We can search. We can carry. We can listen. We can remember. We can protect. We can lighten another person’s burden.

But every human rescuer eventually reaches the end of his reach.

Jesus Christ does not.

This episode is about the one who is missing, the wounded person who still appears strong, the family member who has wandered, the person everyone else has forgotten, and the rescuer who eventually discovers that he needs rescue too.
