Episode 46 – Emily Petroff • Switch Society | No Guilt, No Risk: How Switch Society Is Reimagining Fashion Through Community
🎙️ In this episode of The Fashion Translator, I spoke with Emily Petroff, founder and CEO of Switch Society, about what happens when you remove money from the equation — and give women access to fashion through community, circulation, and zero guilt.
Eighty percent of the American closet hasn’t been worn in the last year. Emily Petroff knew this, because she was living it. But instead of buying more or donating and moving on, she did something different: she put a post on Facebook, rented a meeting room at the Hilton, and invited women to come swap clothes. Twenty women showed up in the 30-below-zero Montana winter. They brought 817 items. And by the end of that first weekend, Emily knew she wasn’t just hosting an event — she was building something.
Switch Society is now a membership-based clothing swap movement incorporated as a public benefit corporation, with a flagship location in Billings, Montana that grew from 37 to 687 members in just six months and now processes around 10,000 items a month. The model is simple and radical at the same time: members pay a monthly or annual fee and can swap in and out as often as they like — no money exchanged, no guilt, no risk. If something doesn’t fit right, swap it back. If you love it, keep it forever. The point isn’t the transaction. The point is freedom.
What makes this conversation go deeper is Emily’s background — psychology, coaching, and a fierce commitment to inclusivity. She didn’t build Switch Society for a narrow segment of women. She built it for all body types, all budgets, all life stages. And what she’s witnessed inside her stores — women healing their relationship with their closet, rediscovering their identity, coming together as communities — goes far beyond fashion.
