NCC launches national opt-out registry to end spam calls & Premier-RFG merger on the line

Stephen Grootes speaks to Hardin Ratshisusu, Acting Commissioner at the National Consumer Commissioner and David Dickens, CEO of the Direct Marketing Association of South Africa (DMASA) about the National Consumer Commission launching a National Opt-Out Registry to crack down on unwanted spam calls. The NCC has published draft guidelines under the Consumer Protection Act that will require all direct marketers - from insurers and retailers to banks and call centres - to register, pay a fee, and cleanse their databases monthly against consumers who have placed a pre-emptive block.

In other interviews, Nicolene Schoeman-Louw, Managing Director at Schoeman Law Inc. talks about the Competition Commission moving to scrap the R6.5 billion Premier-RFG merger. The watchdog accuses Premier Foods of failing to disclose plans to close its Tulbagh fruit canning factory, one of only two in South Africa before the Competition Tribunal approved the deal. The Commission says Premier knew about the closure option but withheld it, and is now asking the Tribunal to revoke the merger approval.
