You Go First: Flight 1073 and the Sixth Day of Creation (Bereishis)

When passengers and crew stopped an attack on Flight 1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv, a debate broke out almost immediately: was it a miracle, or was it human heroism? This class argues that the Torah answered that question on the sixth day of Creation.

We look at heaven and earth created together "like a pot and its lid," the many answers to who God was speaking to when He said נעשה אדם, "Let us make man," and why the plants of Creation waited beneath the ground until Adam prayed for rain. From there we follow the thread to Nachshon at the sea and to Rav Chaim of Volozhin's reading of רוכב שמים בעזרך: God rides the heavens with our help.
