A Saturday afternoon in 1929. A businessman sits alone in his failing office with no way through what has become the worst problem of his career. The telephone rings. The voice on the other end belongs to a man he had already accepted he would never hear again.

⠀

The friend had gone abroad to end his life. He meant to buy an ordinary theater ticket. For reasons he could never explain he found himself in a private box instead, seated beside the one stranger on Earth who could stop him. He came home a different person, with one sentence on his lips - I know the outcome before I start.

⠀

The book that came out of that encounter is called The Message Of A Master, published in 1929 by California Press under the name John McDonald, which may belong to nobody at all. 112 pages. One law. Nine steps. One of those steps is a single word, and that word is why the author declined to be named and why the book has walked quietly through four generations of this field. A great many people believe it is the source material sitting underneath a certain film about a certain secret that sold 20 million copies.
