Ed Chaffin on Servant Leadership, Executive Coaching, AI, and Building High-Performance Teams

Before becoming an international leadership consultant and executive coach, he served as an executive with a publicly traded company and ran its largest division—approximately <strong>1,200 employees and $150 million in revenue</strong>. That division was built through seven acquisitions, while the larger company completed 12 acquisitions as it grew from approximately <strong>$5 million to $300 million in revenue</strong> before being sold for <strong>$1.4 billion in 2007</strong>. </p><p>Ed explains an important distinction about his background: the company that sold for $1.4 billion was not personally his company. He was one of its executives and was heavily involved in the company&#39;s growth, acquisitions, and eventual sale process.</p><p>After retiring from that corporate role, Ed received roughly 150 messages from people he had worked with. He printed the messages and began reviewing them, believing they contained a clue about what he should do next.</p><p>What he discovered surprised him.</p><p>Ed had assumed he had directly coached or mentored perhaps 10 or 12 people during his 14 years with the company. But as he read the messages, he realized that <strong>80 or 90 people had described the impact he had made on their careers and lives</strong>.</p><p>That realization helped shape his next chapter.</p><p>He pursued executive coaching certifications, including work through the <strong>International Coach Federation</strong>, and reinvented himself in 2008 as an international leadership consultant and executive coach.</p><p>His message for leaders is simple but powerful:</p><p><strong>You are always leading, whether you realize it or not.</strong></p><p>Employees are watching how leaders communicate, react, prioritize, and behave—and those actions often have a larger impact than leaders ever realize. </p><p>Ed describes his leadership philosophy as <strong>servant leadership</strong>.</p><p>Leadership, in his view, should not be about protecting one&#39;s position or treating talented people as potential threats.
