They Were Told They Were Lazy. The Real Problem Was Their Brain. | Judith Richardson-Mahre

What if the behavior you’ve been judging is actually a brain difference you’ve never understood?

In this episode of Thought Atlas, I’m joined by Judy R-M, a licensed marriage and family therapist, ADHD coach, parent coach, and speaker who has spent more than 14 years working with neurodiverse individuals, couples, parents, and families.

Judy’s understanding of ADHD is both professional and deeply personal. She is the parent of four neurodiverse children and the partner of a neurodiverse husband. Her own family’s experience ultimately led her from mechanical engineering into clinical work focused on ADHD and neurodiversity.

One of the most powerful moments in our conversation comes from her husband’s reaction when he was diagnosed with ADHD. After years of being made to feel unintelligent, he asked:

“You mean I’m not just stupid?”

That question became a turning point for Judy—and it captures the larger issue at the heart of this conversation: what happens when neurological differences are repeatedly interpreted as character flaws?

We explore:

• Why ADHD is so often mistaken for a behavior problem• The myths surrounding hyperactivity and impulsivity• How negative messages can shape self-worth• Shame and rejection sensitivity• Parenting neurodiverse children with both compassion and boundaries• ADHD and relationships• Why couples can fall into parent-child dynamics• Executive-function challenges• The transition from engineering to therapy• Why understanding the brain can change the way we see ourselves and others• Why neurodiversity should be approached with curiosity rather than immediate judgment

Judy also shares a powerful message for anyone who has spent years believing they are lazy, difficult, unreliable, or somehow less than because of ADHD: learn how your brain works, understand your strengths and struggles, and recognize that ADHD is not a character flaw and not your fault.

Perhaps the biggest question this conversation leaves us with is:

How much human potential gets buried when difference is mistaken for deficiency?

🌍 Thought Atlas

https://joinpodmatch.com/thoughtatlas

🌍 Judy R-M

https://kccares.com/

You can contact Judy directly and learn more about her work through her website.
