Quality of Care Delivered by International Medical Graduates in Canada

<p>This study investigated whether <strong>international medical graduates (IMGs)</strong> practicing in Canada face a higher level of <strong>medicolegal risk</strong> compared to those who studied in Canada or the United States. By analyzing extensive data from the <strong>Canadian Medical Protective Association</strong>, researchers assessed both the frequency of <strong>civil legal actions</strong> and the specific outcomes of those cases. The results demonstrated that there is <strong>no significant difference</strong> between these groups regarding the likelihood of being sued or the probability of a case ending in favor of the plaintiff. These findings challenge common <strong>negative stereotypes</strong> regarding the competence of foreign-trained physicians by showing their degree origin does not impact legal risk. Instead, factors such as <strong>clinical harm</strong> and communication deficiencies were the primary drivers of adverse legal results for all doctors. Consequently, the authors suggest that IMGs provide a <strong>quality of care</strong> comparable to domestic graduates, supporting their vital role in the healthcare workforce.</p>
