350: "SHOP STILL OPEN?" Cornell Gang R4pe Exposes Horrifying Legal Loophole

On this episode of Without a Country, Corinne Fisher dives deep into the rapidly developing Cornell University gang r4pe case, including new reporting that the Tompkins County District Attorney reopened the criminal investigation, revelations about what Jane Doe actually told campus police, the DA’s claim that he never saw a transcript in which she explicitly said she was r4ped, disturbing fraternity group-chat messages including “shop still open," confirmation that the alleged assault was never reported to the Ithaca Police Department, and the impact New York's Voluntary Intoxication Exclusion has had on the case. Corinne also reads firsthand accounts from listeners about SA culture at elite colleges and an anonymous Cornell employee’s account of how the university has handled the scandal internally. Before that, Corinne and Mike discuss two “Enemies of the State,” including Michael Tracey’s attempt to identify the Cornell Jane Doe and viral victim-blaming rage bait surrounding the case; read listener mail about a positive surrogacy experience; examine warnings from AI researchers and anonymous industry insiders about the race to build increasingly powerful AI systems; and close with updates on the Nolan Wells death investigation, Lindsay Clancy’s case following her mistrial, and the extraordinary last-minute legal battle over Tennessee death-row prisoner Christa Pike as the Supreme Court clears the way for what would be Tennessee’s first execution of a woman in more than 200 years.LOS ANGELES!
