China's television industry hit a milestone this week as Hunan Satellite Television aired a fully AI-generated, 30-episode adaptation of the classic novel Journey to the West. Produced in just three months, the series sparked a surge in Mango Excellent Media's stock, which hit its 20 percent daily trading limit twice and added more than 13 billion yuan (US$1.9 billion) to the company's market value. Producer Guo Guo called it a clear signal of policy support for AI drama. With later episodes being refined based on audience feedback, the series represents a new production model for television — and a potential shift in the economics of the entire industry.
