New York City carriage horses --A horse-drawn carriage ride may look charming, but behind this tourist attraction is a life of hardship for the horses forced to pull it. These sensitive animals are made to haul heavy carriages through crowded streets, loud traffic and vehicle exhaust—conditions that can be stressful, unsafe and completely unnatural for them. Long hours on hard pavement can contribute to painful leg, hoof and joint problems, while breathing polluted air and working in extreme heat or cold can put their health at risk.
