Ep 07 - The Case Against Cessationism Part 1

Today, I've got Pastor Zach Rainey with me, a resident scholar with a passion for studying and a wealth of knowledge. We recently delved into the topic of spiritual gifts, inspired by a message I preached a couple of weeks ago about unity and finding our place in the body of Christ.

Our conversation took us to Ephesians 4, where Paul outlines the various gifts bestowed by the Lord, sparking an exploration into the spectrum of beliefs about the gifts of the Spirit. From what I've gathered, there's a wide range of perspectives, from those who condemn the gifts outright to those who zealously promote their unrestrained use.

Let's break it down.

1. Condemnation (Level 1)

Starting at the bottom of the spectrum, we have those who outright condemn any manifestation of the gifts. This extreme perspective often labels such acts as demonic, a sentiment Pastor Jeff encountered in his early church experience.

2. Rejection (Level 2)

Moving up, there are those who reject the idea of the church exercising the gifts. While they may not condemn those who operate in the gifts, they're uncomfortable with the idea and may even believe that these gifts no longer exist.

3. Discouragement (Level 3)

Level 3 brings us to those who seriously question the practice of spiritual gifts, discouraging any use of them. This group expresses skepticism and is hesitant to embrace the supernatural aspects of the gifts.

4. Neutrality (Level 4)

Next, we encounter individuals who claim neutrality but actually lean towards cessationism. While they may not have a strong opinion, they still believe that the gifts have ceased and prefer to remain on the sidelines of the debate.
