Peak Oil to Peak Minerals: The Next Energy Crisis — Bizarro World 37728 Aug1 h 10 min

Gerardo was out this week, so Nick sat down with veteran energy analyst Chris Nelder — his former colleague, co-author of Investing in Renewable Energy, and the creator of more than 280 episodes of The Energy Transition Show.

Nick and Chris began by revisiting Peak Oil. The world never ran out of petroleum, but that was never the argument. Fracking added roughly eight million barrels per day of supply and bought the global economy time. Now most major U.S. shale basins have peaked, the Permian is the last major growth engine, global demand is hovering near a 100-million-barrel-per-day plateau, and electric vehicles are beginning to erode oil consumption.

They also discuss China’s largely unexplained decision to remove millions of barrels per day of demand from the global market during the Iran war. That helped prevent the Strait of Hormuz disruption from producing the oil-price explosion many analysts expected — but China cannot provide that cushion forever.

Then Nick and Chris revisit the technologies they were researching together nearly 20 years ago. Solar emerged as the overwhelming winner, batteries became essential to both utility-scale and distributed power, electric vehicles moved into the mainstream, and China built dominant positions across all three industries. Meanwhile, marine energy and biomass failed to scale, while enhanced geothermal may finally be getting its second chance.

Artificial intelligence complicates everything. Data centers are demanding extraordinary amounts of electricity, gas turbines are booked years in advance, and technology companies increasingly want to build their own power plants behind the meter. Chris worries less about the grid collapsing than about emissions, rising electricity bills, and ordinary ratepayers being forced to subsidize the AI arms race.

Nick and Chris also debate hydroelectric dams and nuclear power. Nick remains bullish on nuclear and sees the global reactor renaissance as necessary. Chris argues that nuclear remains too expensive, too slow, and too politically connected to the weapons industry to compete with solar, wind, and batteries.

Finally, the conversation comes full circle from Peak Oil to “Peak Minerals.” Solar panels, batteries, electric vehicles, transmission systems, and wind turbines require enormous quantities of copper, silver, lithium, gallium, germanium, rare earths, and other critical materials. China controls much of the processing and refining, while Washington is now spending tens of billions of dollars trying to rebuild the supply chains it allowed to disappear.

Did the energy transition reduce one form of resource dependence only to create another? And is copper the mineral that could ultimately constrain the entire transition?
