Killer Mike, Cutmaster Swiff and Moetown Lee sit down with Abdur-Rahim Shaheed, co-founder and CEO of True Products and True Detergent, for a conversation about Black entrepreneurship, ownership, community and the power of circulating the Black dollar.

Shaheed traces his entrepreneurial mindset back to growing up in Anniston, Alabama, where Black owned businesses were part of the fabric of the community. After serving in the U.S. military during the Vietnam era, he returned home, saved his money, bought a used postal truck and started selling clothes and fish. He says he hasn’t had a job since. His philosophy is simple: “I’m not chasing money, I’m chasing freedom.”

The conversation explores what happened to thriving neighborhood businesses, why ownership matters, the importance of creating institutions that can survive generations and what “do for self” means today. Shaheed also shares how Islam changed his life, the lessons he learned from his father, an ambitious business venture that took him to Sierra Leone, and the belief and courage required to become an entrepreneur before you have everything figured out.

Then the crew gets into True Detergent and the mission behind building a Black owned and veteran owned household products company in College Park, Georgia. Shaheed explains the challenges of getting products onto major retail shelves and why supporting independent businesses can create jobs, strengthen communities and build something that lasts.
