Statues can be creepy because they look almost human while being completely lifeless. Their fixed expressions, unnatural stillness, and blank eyes can create the unsettling impression that they’re watching us without ever moving. In the right setting, a deserted park, an old cemetery, or a dimly lit building, a statue can suddenly feel less like an object and more like something patiently waiting.

Perhaps what makes them most disturbing is the possibility that, when we look away, we can never be completely certain they’ll still be standing in exactly the same place.
