The Big Mask Part 1

Originally Aired: December 28, 1952

Dragnet #184, "The Big Mask Part 1," Sergeant Joe Friday and his partner Frank Smith face mounting pressure as a string of brazen supermarket robberies continues to plague Los Angeles. The mysterious bandit, known as the Black Masked Bandit, has successfully hit seven markets using the same calculated method: waiting for managers to open, forcing them at gunpoint to fill shopping carts with expensive items, emptying the safe, and locking the victims in cold storage before calmly walking out. Despite stakeouts and extra patrol units from Metro Division, the suspect continues to evade capture, and the police department is taking heat from both the press and the coroner's office.

Friday and Smith respond to the latest robbery at a county market on Olympic and Maryland, where manager Arthur Scott describes his terrifying encounter with the armed robber. The suspect fits the established pattern: an older man, perhaps 50 to 55 years old, short and slight at around 130 pounds, wearing a worn brown herringbone overcoat and distinctive black mask. Scott remembers the man's watery light blue eyes and his methodical selection of high-end merchandise like caviar and expensive artichoke hearts before forcing him toward the safe.
