The Epic of Gilgamesh – Anonymous

The Epic of Gilgamesh is one of the oldest surviving works of literature, originating in ancient Mesopotamia. It follows Gilgamesh, the powerful king of Uruk, whose strength and arrogance make him both admired and feared by his people.

To challenge him, the gods create Enkidu, a wild man who eventually becomes Gilgamesh's closest friend. Together, they embark on dangerous adventures, including defeating the guardian Humbaba and confronting the Bull of Heaven. Their friendship transforms Gilgamesh, teaching him loyalty, courage, and companionship.

Everything changes when the gods condemn Enkidu to death. Devastated by the loss of his friend, Gilgamesh becomes terrified of his own mortality. He abandons his kingdom and searches for Utnapishtim, a survivor of a great flood who was granted immortality.

Gilgamesh ultimately discovers that eternal life cannot be his. Even a miraculous plant capable of restoring youth is stolen by a serpent before he can use it. Returning to Uruk, he begins to understand that human beings cannot escape death, but they can create meaning through relationships, achievements, wisdom, and what they leave behind.

The epic explores themes of friendship, mortality, grief, power, wisdom, and the search for immortality. Gilgamesh's greatest journey is ultimately not his battle against monsters, but his transformation from an arrogant ruler into a man who accepts the limits of human existence.
