Measured: The Google Data Bug, Protecting Your Business Profile, and What the EU Just Made Legal25 Aug30 min

Three things landed this month that affect how your business shows up online, how you measure it, and what you are legally responsible for. None of them dominated headlines. All three matter for how you run a small business.

In this episode of Measured, we break down what happened and what to actually do about it.

Story one: Google confirmed a search data bug that ran for a week. Starting around August 15, site owners saw significant drops in their Google Search Console data. On August 21, Google confirmed the numbers were wrong. Not an algorithm change. A reporting bug on Google's end. If you made decisions based on August traffic numbers, those decisions were made on bad data.

Story two: How to actually protect your Google Business Profile. Google Business Profile suspensions have been a running story through 2026. Recent guidance from Search Engine Land lays out what small businesses can actually do to reduce the risk, from keeping verification documents ready to maintaining consistent business information across every platform.

Story three: The EU just made AI disclosure a legal requirement. On August 2, 2026, the EU AI Act's Article 50 took effect. Chatbots must disclose they are AI. AI-generated content must be labeled. Deepfakes must be identified as artificial. Fines reach up to €15 million or 3% of global annual turnover. The law applies to any business whose AI outputs meaningfully reach European users, not just European businesses. We also cover how watermarking actually works, since AI companies including Anthropic have already started watermarking every output to comply.
