Families of 9/11 just walked a petition into New York City Hall asking Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) to stay away from Friday’s 25th anniversary memorial. More than a dozen relatives of the dead stood on the steps and said the mayor’s presence turns a private hour of grief into a political photo. The Change.org petition started by Giovanni Galante — whose wife, Grace, was killed in the attacks — now has more than 102,000 signatures. They asked for one window: 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the National September 11 Memorial, where the names of 2,983 victims will be read. Mamdani has said he will be there. Cheri Sparacio, who lost her husband, Tom, on the 84th floor of the South Tower, put the line where families want it: “It’s not about his religion or where he came from. It’s about the policies he has today.” They pointed to his chief counsel, Ramzi Kassem, who represented an Al-Qaeda terrorist held at Guantánamo. Charles Wolf said Giuliani and Pataki held their hands after the attacks. “Mayor Mamdani has not shown any of that.” Mamdani says he loves the city and wants the week focused on families and first responders. Families answered that when he walks in, politics walks in with him — and this is their time to grieve.
