Ayurveda Myth Busters: What Are You Really Consuming?

Ayurveda Myth Busters: What Are You Really Consuming?20 Aug57 min

In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast: Exploring Possibility, host Nicky Yazbeck sits down with clinical herbalist, Ayurvedic practitioner, and functional nutrition counselor Lila Swanberg for a fascinating exploration of Ayurveda, mental health, gut health, spirituality, and our relationship with disease and healing.

At the center of the conversation is a deceptively simple question: What are we digesting?

From an Ayurvedic perspective, digestion extends far beyond the food we put into our bodies. We are continually taking in experiences, information, emotions, relationships, stress, technology, and the world around us. Lila explores how what we consume and our ability to process it can influence our physical health, mental and emotional well-being, and connection to ourselves.

Lila introduces the foundations of Ayurvedic medicine, including the doshas and Ayurveda’s emphasis on balance, while exploring how this ancient healing system approaches health and disease differently from conventional Western medicine. Rather than viewing symptoms or individual parts of the body in isolation, Ayurveda considers the whole person: diet, digestion, lifestyle, mental state, environment, patterns, and the natural fluctuations that occur throughout life.

The conversation also explores the increasingly recognized relationship between gut health and mental health, the role of herbs and herbal medicine, and some of the misconceptions surrounding popular natural remedies and adaptogens. Lila challenges the idea that herbs such as Ashwagandha and Shilajit are universally beneficial simply because they are natural, explaining why an individualized approach matters.

Nicky and Lila also move beyond physical health to examine the impact of modern life. What happens when we are constantly consuming information, stimulation, technology, opinions, and expectations? And what might change when we become more intentional about what we allow into our bodies and minds?
