Tommy Edwards bio and introduction
Tonight, for the landmark 2,800th episode of the Typical Skeptic Podcast, we welcome back former Virginia Tech football standout, mental-health advocate, brain-injury awareness campaigner, musician, artist, and experiencer “Touchdown Tommy” Edwards.
Tommy became part of the resurgence of Virginia Tech football under Coach Frank Beamer. During a historic 1993 performance against Pittsburgh, he scored four touchdowns, tying the Virginia Tech single-game scoring mark of 24 points. He was also part of the first father-and-son combination in NCAA history to score touchdowns in bowl games, following his father, former Hokie Ken Edwards. Tommy later continued his college career at Boise State. Virginia Tech’s official records and Virginia Tech Magazine document his football background.
Away from football, Tommy has openly discussed mental-health struggles and the lasting effects he associates with repetitive head trauma. He has advocated for greater awareness of concussions, traumatic brain injuries, suspected CTE, and the human cost of contact sports. His mental-health outreach included transforming a school bus into the colorful “Come On, Get Happy Bus.” WDBJ7 and The Washington Post have covered portions of his journey.
Tommy has also spoken publicly about the Virginia Tech tragedy, alleged targeting, and experiences he believes connect to covert programs dating back to childhood. These latter claims represent Tommy’s personal testimony and have not been independently verified.
After disappearing from public contact for approximately one month, Tommy contacted Rob yesterday with devastating news: he says he was struck by a car and left with 11 cracked ribs and a serious head injury. Tommy believes the collision was intentional. Tonight, if his health permits, he will tell us what he remembers, where he has been, and why he believes he was deliberately targeted.
