The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption6 Aug50 min

The Shawshank Redemption is now the highest-rated film on IMDb's Top 250, a fixture of cable rotation, and shorthand for cinematic hope itself. But in 1994, it was a box office failure; a $25 million adaptation of a Stephen King novella. It opened on just 33 screens, and despite fantastic test screenings, got buried under Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump. A movie that was destined to be a huge success, disappeared uneventfully from cinema screens, and usually that's the end of the story.

But destiny had its own plans for The Shawshank Redemption.

A movie about hope, patience and decades-long endurance became a story about its own hopeful, patient, decades-long climb. Through a slow-burn afterlife on home video and TNT, that rewrote its fortunes, to become a cinematic classic beloved by audiences worldwide.
