Movie star Joel McCrea rides the airwaves as Ranger Jace Pearson in NBC's Tales of the Texas Rangers — a hard-nosed police procedural with sagebrush in its boots, dramatizing real cases from the Ranger files with technical advice from the legendary Captain M.T. "Lone Wolf" Gonzaullas. In "Soft Touch," first heard October 29, 1950, a quiet elderly couple is found beaten to death in their own home. Robbery looks like the motive, but the savagery of the attack tells Pearson something uglier: this was no panicked amateur. Working the lab evidence, the pawn tickets, and the neighborhood gossip, Jace and Charcoal close in on a killer who picked what he figured was an easy mark.
