Mayor Brandon Johnson projects upcoming $882M deficit next year3 Sept4 min

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is projecting an upcoming budget deficit of $882 million dollars next year. It’s one of the largest gaps in decades and is likely to prompt another divisive battle between the mayor and the City Council over how to close it. In his annual budget forecast, Johnson said the gap is driven in part by cost of living raises for union workers, increased gas and energy costs caused by the U.S. war against Iran, and failed revenue streams passed by the city council last year to avoid a tax on corporations. He will outline his ideas for closing the gap in his forthcoming budget address next month.
