The Business Behind the Deadline A deadline is a prediction.It is made before the work is fully understood. <ul><li>Then the work begins testing it.</li><li>A requirement changes.</li><li>A dependency behaves differently.</li><li>The effort turns out to be larger.</li><li>The date moves.</li><li>The usual post-mortem asks why.</li></ul> --- This episode asks a different question: "What did we learn about the work that we did not know when we set the deadline?" The question becomes more consequential when viewed through the nature of a business itself. --- A business is a repeatable process for creating and delivering value that people want or need, at a price they will pay, in a way that satisfies their needs and expectations, while leaving enough profit for the business to continue.So the important lesson from a missed deadline is not always “estimate better.”Sometimes it is: "understand the assumptions behind the prediction better." --- This episode explores Deadline Theory — the original prediction about work that had not yet been examined — and the habit of studying the failure without studying the theory that produced --- Before the next deadline: "What has to be true for this date to be right?"
