#113 Kip Andersen: What Religion, Netflix, & Joe Rogan All Hid
On this episode of the Acid For Squares podcast, hosts Tanya Dahl and Cody Blue sit down with acclaimed documentary filmmaker, producer, writer, and activist Kip Andersen, the filmmaker behind the groundbreaking documentaries Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret, What the Health, Seaspiracy, and his explosive new film, Christspiracy: The Spirituality Secret. Working with powerful executive producers like Leonardo DiCaprio and Joaquin Phoenix, Andersen’s films have reached millions of people around the world by investigating the environmental, physical, ethical, and spiritual consequences of humanity’s relationship with animals, while exposing the powerful institutions that profit from it.
Kip’s latest film, Christspiracy, takes that investigation somewhere even more controversial: religion. After years of traveling the world with co-director Kameron Waters, from Jerusalem and the Vatican to Oxford and India, interviewing theologians, religious leaders, scholars, farmers, Indigenous spiritual teachers, and ancient-text experts, their investigation became centered around one deceptively simple question: Is there a spiritual way to kill an animal? Or even more provocatively: How would Jesus kill an animal? When their original streaming partner demanded that key information be removed from the film, Kip and his team made an extraordinary decision. They bought back the rights to their own movie and released Christspiracy independently and uncensored.
In this conversation, Kip takes Tanya and Cody behind the curtain of that battle and into the deeper questions driving his life’s work. They explore the catastrophic environmental impact of industrial animal agriculture, its relationship to human health, and the psychological and spiritual consequences of a global system built upon the exploitation and slaughter of living beings. Kip challenges us to consider something even bigger: What happens to the human soul when suffering becomes so normalized that we stop seeing it? And what happens when the institutions we trust, including corporations, governments, health organizations, environmental groups, and even religious traditions, become entangled with the very systems they may be unwilling to confront?
Kip also reveals the extraordinary journey behind Christspiracy, the discoveries about Jesus that proved too controversial for NETFLIX, and how the film’s investigation into Jesus, scripture, sacrifice, compassion, and humanity’s relationship with
