Why Can't We Drink Dirty Water (like hunter-gatherers do)?

Hunter-gatherer human populations are able to drink from puddles and other water sources that we would regard as tainted, yet do not usually get ill. Why is this? Is there something unique in their gastrointestinal microbiomes that make them impervious or more resilient than we are?
