Type 1 Diabetes and Pregnancy

Before the availability of insulin therapy, diabetes was a contraindication to pregnancy. It was recommended that women with type 1 diabetes (T1D) not get pregnant.

Today, with intensive insulin therapy, many tools exist to care for people with T1D. Nevertheless, pregnant women with T1D are still considered to have high-risk pregnancies, and susceptible to complications such as fetal overgrowth, or having a large baby.

Complications of T1D and pregnancy was the topic of a presentation by Camille Powe, MD, at this year's 13th Annual Type 1 Diabetes Fellows Program. Dr. Powe is co-director of the Diabetes and Pregnancy Program at Massachusetts General Hospital at Mass General Brigham. She’s also Associate Professor of Medicine and Associate Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School.
