Professor David Flint: Only Pauline Hanson's Swiss-Style Reforms Can Save Australia | Court of Public Opinion
Emeritus Professor David Flint AM, former head of the Australian Broadcasting Authority and the Australian Press Council and National Convener of Australians for Constitutional Monarchy, joins Jeremy Cordeaux AM to discuss his Spectator column arguing Australia is on the road to ruin. He explains why he believes Switzerland's system of citizen-initiated referendums would put politicians back on a leash, and recalls South Australian premier Charles Kingston's 1891 proposal to give the people the final say.
Professor Flint also takes aim at the caucus rule, preferential voting, a House of Representatives he calls a rubber stamp, and the way High Court judges are appointed. Dr John Bruni joins the conversation to question whether today's Australians have the civic appetite for it, and the Professor answers with lessons from the 1999 republic referendum.
This interview aired live on The Court of Public Opinion on Friday 9 October 2026.
