#744 From Wooden Sticks to Zero-Torque AI: The Evolution of the Golf PutterNuevo23 min

Golf putters have evolved from traditional wooden clubs into precision-engineered equipment. For centuries, the goal has remained the same: improve alignment, stability, ball speed, roll and consistency.

1. The Schenectady Controversy (1902)

Arthur F. Knight introduced an aluminum mallet with a center shaft. Walter Travis used it to win the 1903 U.S. Amateur and 1904 British Amateur. In 1910, the R&A banned certain center-shafted putters, demonstrating how innovation could challenge golf traditions.

2. PING Anser Revolution (1966)

Karsten Solheim transformed putter design with the PING Anser. Its heel-toe weighting, cavity back and offset hosel increased stability on off-center strikes. The design became the foundation for modern blade putters.

3. Jack Nicklaus and the Mallet (1986)

Jack Nicklaus won his sixth Masters using the oversized MacGregor Response ZT 615. Its higher moment of inertia (MOI) helped resist twisting on mishits, establishing mallets as serious performance equipment.

4. Alignment and Artificial Intelligence

The Odyssey 2-Ball (2001) simplified visual alignment. TaylorMade Spider introduced advanced perimeter weighting, while Odyssey Stroke Lab improved weight distribution and balance.

In 2023, Odyssey Ai-ONE introduced AI-designed face technology to improve ball-speed consistency across different impact locations.

5. Long Putters and Anchoring

Since January 2016, anchoring a putter against the body has been prohibited. However, long and broomstick putters remain legal when used without anchoring.

6. The Zero-Torque Revolution (2024–2026)

Modern zero-torque putters aim to minimize unwanted clubhead rotation by aligning the shaft axis close to the head’s center of gravity.

Models such as Odyssey Square 2 Square, TaylorMade Spider ZT and Wilson Infinite Zero Torque are designed to reduce the hand torque needed to control face orientation.

However, zero torque does not eliminate face rotation caused by the golfer’s movement.

7. The Future of Putting (2027–2030)

Three technologies could transform putter fitting:

- 3D Printing: Customized internal weighting and center-of-gravity positioning.

- AI Fitting: Analysis of face rotation, stroke tempo, impact location, shaft lean and dynamic loft.

- Personal
