Episode 660: Rest Is Not the Same as Doing Nothing
Lying on the couch scrolling your phone is inactivity.
But it is not rest.
In this episode I draw a clear distinction between what restores a human being and what merely passes the time. Genuine rest produces something on the other side: more capacity, quieter mind, a body that has had a chance to repair. Most of what we call rest keeps the nervous system engaged, stimulated, and reacting, which means nothing actually recovers.
I share a useful framework for thinking about the different kinds of rest, physical, mental, sensory, and emotional, and why most of us are deficient in at least two or three of them regardless of how many hours we spend on the couch. I also share honestly what actually restores me versus what I used to mistake for restoration.
