What happens when you create the “perfect” job candidate and send her into today’s job market? Apparently, not much.

Emily Durham, better known as Emily the Recruiter, decided to build a completely fake LinkedIn profile and resume for a candidate who checked all the right boxes and then applied to 40 jobs to see whether being “perfect on paper” was actually enough to get noticed. The results were… well, let’s just say things are bad when you have to become a “mad scientist” to figure out what is happening in the job market.

We talk about why the traditional idea that you can simply apply for enough jobs and eventually get one is increasingly out of touch. We also get into something that hits particularly close to home: what happens when you're mid-career, over 40, and suddenly realize that the job market you knew doesn't really exist anymore? Emily shares what recruiters actually look for and what candidates can realistically control as AI changes the hiring process.

And then we get into the stuff that makes me want to scream into the void: workplace ageism, coded language like “fresh perspectives,” pregnancy discrimination, and the pressure to constantly prove that you're still relevant. But don’t worry, this episode isn’t all doom and gloom. We also talk about accidental entrepreneurship, portfolio careers, and why your job does not have to be the thing you love most about your life.
