From the Golden Dawn Underhill took her hermetic training and used it to resuscitate Christian Mysticism in the Church of England. Let's see what Golden Dawn practices she smuggled into Anglo-Catholic Spirituality! What happened when one of Christianity's greatest mystics immersed herself in the world of ceremonial magic?
Long before Evelyn Underhill became famous for Mysticism and Practical Mysticism, she moved within London's occult revival and wrote one of the most extraordinary esoteric novels of the twentieth century: The Column of Dust (1909).
In this livestream we'll journey through both The Column of Dust and Practical Mysticism, tracing Underhill's remarkable transformation from the language of ritual circles, Pentagrams, Hebrew Divine Names, grimoires, and ceremonial evocation toward the interior path of contemplation, union with Reality, and the spiritual life.
We'll read directly from both books, explore Underhill's descriptions of ceremonial magic, compare them with historical Golden Dawn practice, and ask:
• How much authentic Golden Dawn symbolism appears in The Column of Dust?
• Did Underhill reject ceremonial magic...or transcend it?
• How did ritual become contemplation?
