"It Has Had The Opposite Effect": LA Mansion Tax Kills 9,000 Homes

A study from the RAND Corporation confirms what builders knew from day one: Los Angeles' "mansion tax" — Measure ULA — has done the exact opposite of what voters were promised. Instead of funding affordable housing, the 4%–5.5% transfer tax has eliminated over 9,000 new housing units, wiped out 16,500 construction jobs, and drained $452 million in municipal revenue since April 2023.

The calculus was never complicated. Tack a 5.5% tax on top of existing fees at the close of a $10 million-plus deal, and developers don't absorb it — they walk. Projects that should have broken ground didn't. Apartment buildings that would have housed real people were never permitted. Nobody is shocked except the people who wrote the law.

Progressive cities keep reaching for real estate transfer taxes as a shortcut to solving housing shortages. The RAND data is a direct rebuke: punishing the act of building doesn't produce more housing. It produces less — while starving the city of the very revenue it was chasing.

Subscribe to @reasonablenews and hit the notification bell for daily news that follows the evidence, not the narrative.

#NFRP #LosAngeles #MansionTax

GO PREMIUM WITH REASONABLE+ FOR UNCENSORED ACCESS 🌟
https://ReasonableTV.com/

🛍️ MERCH - https://Store.ReasonableTV.com/

💬 JOIN our FREE Discord Community!
