The Past Repeats: Lessons from One Life in American History with Author Lee Knapp
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Lee Knapp, author of the book I'm History ... but do I repeat myself? Lee Knapp is a lifelong Virginian and is steeped in its history. She grew up in Richmond, attended college at William and Mary in Colonial Williamsburg, and now lives in rural Louisa near Charlottesville. Lee spent her career as a high school history teacher, an entrepreneur and artist around all things ceramic, a copywriter and editor, a proprietor of a tourist home, sometimes called an Airbnb, and of course, an author.
In my book review, I stated I'm History ... but do I repeat myself is a memoir by Lee Knapp. We follow Lee from a young girl to retirement and watch all the iterations in between. Along the way, we also see the change in Richmond, Virginia, her old alma mater, and the world at large.
Lee tackles tough subjects. Is it okay to love and respect someone despite some of the things they believe? Do cultural differences really make people different? Can new versions of old things be as good as the the original? Are we making history or is history making us?
This was an interesting story that looks not only at her own life, but weaves in historical context as well. No doubt, I would have enjoyed being in one of her history classes.
If you like a good memoir that makes you think about your beliefs, then this is the book for you.
