He Rejected Their Sympathy to Their Faces. Every Word Was Earned

Coleman's daughter was disabled in an accident caused by an illegal alien driver. She did not choose that. She did not deserve it. The man who hit her had no business being in the country.

Mr. Coleman sat before the House Judiciary Subcommittee examining sanctuary policies and said what every American who has lost something to this failure of policy has wanted to say to the people responsible.

“I reject your guys’ sympathy, to be honest with you. There’s no way you guys are sorry. Not one of you guys have ever called me. Not one of you guys have ever reached out to me. Not one of you guys have ever sat there and seen me in the hallways and said, hey, sorry about your daughter. You guys do it right here while you guys are grandstanding on top of your soapbox.”

He told them their sympathy inside a hearing room means nothing when they have never once reached out to him or his family outside of it. That the only time they care is when the cameras are on.

He told them a pathway to citizenship exists. It is not jump the fence and apply. You cannot walk into a hospital and become a doctor because you want to. There are processes. There are rules. They apply to everyone or they apply to no one.

He told them sanctuary cities are like a household with no parent. Everyone runs around doing whatever they want. And it sucks.

He told them that if sanctuary states simply cooperated with ICE, one or two officers could handle a pickup. Instead ICE has to send an army because they have to search for people the local government is actively hiding. And then those officers get abused in the street while doing their jobs.

Then he set aside the prepared statement he had brought with him.

None of it felt relevant anymore after listening to the Democrats in that room. So he just said what he felt.

“My daughter doesn’t deserve this. She didn’t ask for any of this. The people that jumped the fence did, though. They knew exactly what they were doing. They still chose to move forward in that direction. And every day something’s happening to somebody. And it is your guys’ fault. I hold each and every one of you responsible for it. And I always will.”

Rand Paul stood with Mr. Coleman.
