S6 Ep1 - King Saul and Suicidal Empathy

Welcome to Season 6 of Remember What’s Next, with Ellie Bass and Rabbi Ken Spiro.

This season, we’re exploring Jewish history through the people who shaped it: who they were, the choices they made, and how their influence continues to shape our lives as Jews today.

We’re beginning with Shaul, King Saul, Israel’s first king, whose story raises difficult questions about leadership, compassion, and moral courage. How could the same man who spared Agag, the king of Amalek, later order the killing of the priests of Nov? What shaped his judgment—and what can we learn from those contradictions?

We’ll also explore the idea of “suicidal empathy”: when compassion, disconnected from judgment and responsibility, ends up enabling harm. How do we distinguish mercy from misplaced sympathy? When does humility become a fear of standing firm? And how do we recognize when our own emotions are clouding our sense of what is right?

Join us as we get to know Shaul—and consider what his story asks of us today.

Want the full story?
