The Road to La Begins: Everything You Need To Know About Qualifying for LA 2028
Welcome to The Road to Los Angeles, Travis Mewhirter’s series on all things you need to know about how to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games in beach volleyball. A quick breakdown of the 24 spots:
- 14 will come to the teams with the most points accumulated from December of 2026 through June of 2028, using their best 8 finishes.
- 5 will go to the winners of the 2026 Continental Championships
- 3 will go to the winners of the new Q Series tournaments, all to be played in the summer of 2028
- 1 will go to the winner of the 2027 World Championships in the Netherlands
- 1 will be a wild card from USA Volleyball, which will most likely be an Olympic trial
Fascinating races to follow, outside of USA Volleyball, include:
- How will the new-look German men fare, with Clemens Wickler partnering with Lukas Pfretzschner and Nils Ehlers picking up Lui Wust
- The Brazilian women could reasonably have three teams in the top 10 in the world. Will it be Ana Patricia and Duda making a resurgence, or will Carol and Rebecca qualify again?
- The Swiss women are deep again. Will it be Leona Kernen and Joana Mader, Nina Brunner and Tanja Huberli, or Anouk Verge-Depre and Zoe Verge-Depre?
- Who will be the surprise team to qualify for LA 2028? There’s always one.
