The Boy Who Simulated Death and His Anxiety Vanished | Smarter While You Sleep

In the summer of 1896, a healthy boy of sixteen was alone in an upstairs room in Madurai when a sudden fear of death came over him. He didn't run from it. By his own later telling, he lay down and acted it out, as real as he could make it. And he said the fear of death left him that day and never came back. 🪔 I have known a good many people who said a fear had left them. The strong schoolboy who slept so deeply that almost nothing could wake him. A note left behind, and a train ticket chosen from an old atlas. Stones and broken pots thrown at a silent boy in a temple. A mother who climbed a hill to bring him home, and went home without him. A hot path where his friends thought they had lost him. Robbers with sticks in the middle of the night. And a second room, nearly fifty-four years after the first, where a real illness asked that boy's old question one more time.

If these Sleep Stories help your night, don't forget to subscribe so the next story can find you when you need it most.

Tell me something before you drift off, nightlings.
