Hoover Dam Ritual Part 1: Father & Son Died on Same Day, 14 Years Apart6 oct43 min

On the darkest days of the year, a story of sacrifice began at the Colorado River.

Hoover Dam was called a vision in the desert—a monumental project that would tame the Colorado River, create Lake Mead, generate power, deliver water across the Southwest, and help transform the American desert.

But the price was enormous.

In this episode, we follow the haunting story of John Gregory Tierney and his son, Patrick William Tierney. J.G. Tierney was lost in the Colorado River while working on an early survey for the future dam. Fourteen years later, on December 20, 1935, Patrick Tierney became the last fatality recorded at the Hoover Dam construction site. They were father and son. They died on the same calendar day, fourteen years apart. Their names remain together on a memorial at the dam.

But the Tierney story is only the beginning.

We explore the construction of Hoover Dam during the Great Depression, the thousands of men who descended into Black Canyon, the dangerous diversion tunnels, the enormous concrete structure that emerged from the canyon—and the workers who never came home.

The official Bureau of Reclamation count records 96 industrial fatalities at the dam site, while broader historical counts associated with the project reach 112 deaths. The memorial created by artist Oskar J.W. Hansen carries the haunting words:

“They died to make the desert bloom.”

We also journey beneath the waters of Lake Mead, where the creation of the reservoir swallowed the historic town of St. Thomas, and examine the strange remnants of the past that have emerged as the lake has fallen.

From the Winter Solstice and its ancient symbolism of darkness giving way to light, to the death of two generations of the Tierney family, to the dam that ultimately helped reshape the American Southwest—this is a story about ambition, sacrifice, death, rebirth, and the extraordinary price of progress.

What really happened at Hoover Dam—and what did it cost to make the desert bloom?
