How Could a Crucified Man Be King? The Scandal of the Cross (John 19:17-27)

The cross is so familiar to us today that it's easy to forget just how shocking it was. To the Roman world, crucifixion was a humiliating death reserved for slaves and criminals. Yet above Jesus' head were the words: “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”
In Part 1 of our study of the crucifixion, we walk through John 19:17-27 and unpack what actually happened at Golgotha, why the cross was so scandalous to both Jews and Romans, and how Jesus is crowned King through the very suffering meant to humiliate Him.
We also explore the meaning behind “the place of the skull,” why Jesus was crucified between two criminals, the significance of His title being written in three languages, and the remarkable fulfillment of Psalm 22 as Roman soldiers cast lots for His clothing. Finally, we see Jesus caring for His mother even while hanging on the cross.
📖 Scripture: John 19:17-27 (ESV)
🎙️ Bible Bible Bible is a verse-by-verse podcast hosted by brothers Stephen and Ben Joffer.
